The KPI Programme indicator dashboards help you understand how your mental health and addiction service is doing compared to others across Aotearoa New Zealand. They show information in a clear, visual way that assists you to understand trends and patterns and gain insights that help you focus on where to make improvements.
Start with the big picture
There are six indicators – seclusion, wait times, seven-day follow up, 28-day readmission, continuity of care and whānau engagement. Each indicator provides several dashboards that allow you to explore information in different ways.
Pick an indicator that relates to your area of work:
- In a community setting – seven-day follow up, wait times and whānau engagement relate to your mahi
- In an inpatient setting – seclusion, 28-day readmission, wait times and continuity of care all relate to your mahi
- For NGOs – whānau engagement and continuity of care relate to your mahi.
Begin with the first dashboard. This is where you can benchmark (compare) at a national level. Start by asking these three questions:
- How well is my/our service performing compared to the national average?
- How well is my/our service performing with this indicator compared to other similar services?
- What key variations can I/we see?
Watch: Using the dashboards
These short videos in our Resource section show you how to use the KPI dashboards, apply filters, and understand the data in a simple way.

Focus on what matters to you
Exploring filter options for each dashboard allows you to dive a little deeper. Filters are always located in the top right-hand corner of the dashboard.
Compare different time periods using financial year quarter
All data provided in the indicator dashboards is broken down by financial year quarters. Using the financial year quarter, you can go back and look at information from FY 2016/17 up to two quarters behind the current quarter you are in.
Financial year quarter filters cannot be multi-selected, but the first visualisation in the seclusion, wait times, seven-day follow up, and 28-day readmission dashboards provides five quarters of information for better comparison. The continuity of care indicator does allow for multiple quarters to be selected.
Please note Indicator dashboards will default to the very last quarter we have information for. You will need to apply filters if you are looking for information for a specific quarter.
Filter using demographic information
Select age ranges, gender and ethnicity related to the people you serve. Exploring these filters will change what you see in the top visualisation.
Some dashboards provide population filters for quick selection, others ask you to choose age bands.
Please note Indicator dashboards will ‘select all’ as a default setting. You will need to apply filters if you are looking for specific demographic information.
Tip: Square boxes allow you to select multiple categories. For example, to filter for adult services, age ranges 18 to 64. Just hold down the ‘Ctrl’ key and use your mouse to tick the boxes you want.
Interact with other visualisations to get more specific information
Many of the visualisations in the dashboards are interactive. This means you just need to click on a bar or organisation name and more filtering is applied. This is helpful if you want to dive even deeper into the information.
Tip: To remove the filter, simply click on the bar or name you selected, or hit the refresh button on the top left-hand side of your web browser to reset the dashboard to default settings.
